Each year, the Michigan State Men’s Lacrosse team plays their final home game to benefit an organization that supports the Lansing community at large as chosen by the graduating seniors. Past recipients have included Ele’s Place and Ashley’s Dream. This year, the team has chosen to focus on Breast Cancer Awareness. This cause will receive 100% of the profits from the game’s ticket, t-shirts, and commemorative jersey sales. The goal of the event is to raise $15,000 to help find a cure as well as treat those who are diagnosed with this devastating disease.
Breast cancer is a subject the MSU team knows of first hand. The wife of their assistant coach, Andy Tibbits, has recently been treated for the disease. Lisa Tibbits was diagnosed with breast cancer in September 2009 and has undergone surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation to help address this completely unexpected diagnosis. At 41, the mother of two small children and with no family history of the disease, Lisa was not a prime candidate to contract the disease that affects 1 in 8 women over their lifetimes. Yet, she was fortunate since the disease was detected early and treated before it spread to other parts of her body.
Part of the proceeds from this benefit game will go to the Ingham Regional Medical Center’s Breast Care Center where Lisa was treated. This center is trying to secure digital mammography technology, which will lead to better early detection, a crucial step in beating this terrible disease. This game will help the center in its fundraising efforts, which in turn will help many women throughout the greater Lansing area.
