Bariatric (weight loss) surgery is a
treatment option for morbid obesity. Morbid obesity is defined as a BMI (body
mass index) greater than 40, or a BMI greater than 35 in an individual with
preexisting medical conditions (i.e., diabetes, high blood pressure,
osteoarthritis). Morbid obesity means that your excess weight is putting your
life at risk.
Bariatric surgical treatment has been proven as an effective long-term weight
loss solution. Bariatric surgical procedures provide you with a "tool" to help
you with your weight loss journey. Two types of effective bariatric surgery are
laparoscopic roux-en-y gastric bypass and laparoscopic adjustable gastric
banding.
The actual weight a patient will lose is dependent on the patient's age,
weight before surgery, overall health, ability to exercise, and adherence to
dietary guidelines. Potential bariatric patients should look for a
multidisciplinary program that promotes the best possible surgical outcomes and
weight loss success.
