McLaren Central Michigan offers state-of-the-art laser treatment for patients living with open-angle glaucoma. Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) is the latest treatment option available for the management and control of open-angle glaucoma, made possible by the Selecta Duet glaucoma laser system.
Prior to this innovation, glaucoma treatment has consisted mainly of drug therapies, such as eye drops, or Argon Laser Trabeculoplasty (ALT). The prescriptions are costly, must be administered daily, may cause side effects, and are a little more difficult for patients to comply with. ALT is another form of laser treatment. Its use is limited by unintended side effects, such as scarring in the eye, which makes the effectiveness of the treatment only temporary.
Benefits of SLT laser treatment:
- Safe and proven to remain effective over many years
- Targeted thermal laser energy significantly minimizes damage and scarring to surrounding tissue in the eye
- May alter the need for glaucoma medications in the future
