Obesity is fast becoming one of the most prevalent chronic medical conditions in America. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that there are 60 million obese adults in the United States, or about 30% of the adult population. Perhaps even more ominous is that 16% of children and teens between the ages of 6 and 19 years are overweight, suggesting that the prevalence of adult obesity will continue to increase in the foreseeable future.

This major segment of the population is at higher risk of developing many diseases, including diabetes. We now know that weight loss surgery can help to decrease the incidence of diabetes. As many as 90% of patients had improved glucose control following bariatric surgery, investigators told attendees at the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

McLaren Bariatric and Metabolic Institute has a team of specially trained medical specialists ready to assist people in their journey to lose weight and realize a more active, healthy life. Since its inception in 2006, McLaren’s surgical weight loss program has helped over 1,200 people with their weight loss and health goals through medical management, bariatric surgery, nutritional counseling and bariatric support groups. The full continuum of care provided increases the likelihood for long-term weight loss success. McLaren Bariatric Institute has office locations in Flint and Clarkston.
