MSU Breslin Cancer Center
Cancer is an "up-close-and-personal" disease that demands prompt and thorough diagnosis, effective treatment, and ongoing medical management. Based at McLaren Greater Lansing's Greenlawn campus, MSU's Breslin Cancer Center is a full-service, community-based outpatient cancer care facility, with a reach that extends throughout the U.S. through its participation in clinical trials. Oncologists, nurses, and the cancer treatment team become part of each patient's "family" support system.
Here are some highlights of the Center's approach to patient care:
- A multidisciplinary team approach, where the clinical team works with each patient for coordinated and comprehensive treatment;
- A dedicated chemotherapy outpatient infusion center with certified chemotherapy infusion nurses;
- An on-site pharmacist who mixes all chemotherapy regimens and is available to teach patients how to self-administer medications at home, or answer questions about infusion, oral medication and complementary therapies;
- A dedicated clinical trials office that seeks matches for patients that qualify for regional or nationally approved clinical trials. Clinical trials offer qualified patients experimental therapies that may complement or provide outcomes that exceed the current standard of care;
- Physicians and nurses work as a team in coordinating individual patient care;
- An on-site oncology social worker to provide support and counsel to patients and families before, during and after treatment;
- Works closely with McLaren Greater Lansing's inpatient oncology unit and the Radiation Oncology Program
- Outpatient procedures include bone marrow biopsies, lumbar punctures, and thoracenteses and paracenteses (clearing fluids from the lung or abdomen, respectively);
- Patients referred to specialized centers on the Greenlawn Campus, including the Breast Care Center and the Radiation Oncology Center.
