Breathless in Michigan: Pulmonary Diseases Take A Toll!

Pulmonary and respiratory tract diseases rank third in morbidity and mortality in Michigan. Heart disease and cancer are #1 and #2, respectively. Whether it’s trying to recover from a wheezing asthma attack, or an acute respiratory infection, or fighting life-threatening challenges like emphysema and lung cancer, we discover the intimacy between life and breath. Smoking remains the primary culprit behind pulmonary diseases like lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, emphysema and chronic bronchitis.

Pulmonary diseases include:

  • Asthma
  • Allergies
  • Environmental respiratory infections
  • Pneumonia
  • Bronchitis
  • Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
  • Emphysema
  • Lung Cancer
  • Sleep Apnea

We will continue to add new information about pulmonary diseases. We learn best and adopt new behaviors by hearing others’ experiences. So, consider yourself invited to share your experiences with pulmonary disease by e-mailing: webmaster@irmc.org
