Book Review:
The Promise of Sleep. William Dement, M.D., Ph.D., NY: Dell Publishing, 1999.
Thanks to sleep pioneer William Dement, M.D., Ph.D., and other sleep researchers, healthy sleep has been empirically proven to be the single most important factor in predicting longevity. Healthy sleep has more influence than diet, exercise or heredity. Even though this was published several years ago, the general public knows more about diet than sleep. This book provides a sweeping tour of the sleeping body and mind, and the price we pay for depriving ourselves of the sleep we need. Sleep deprivation has been linked to fatal car accidents, shipping disasters, heart disease, and compromised immune systems. Dr. Dement tackles common sleep disorders, like insomnia, sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, overcoming jet lag, narcolepsy and more. He presents an easy self-test to determine how much sleep you need each night. This book has been donated to the Consumer Health Section of the Chi Medical Library.
