Hematology/Medical Oncology

Lisa A. Galloway, DO, received her bachelors’ degree in graphic design and her Masters in art therapy from California State University, Los Angeles. After 12 years in business, Dr. Galloway went on to receive her medical degree from Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, California, in 1998. She then completed her rotating internship at St. John Oakland Hospital, her internal medicine residency at St. John Medical Center, and completed her oncology fellowship at William Beaumont Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. She concurrently served with the Michigan Air National Guard at Selfridge ANGB as a flight surgeon where she was also the Chief of Clinical Services and the Chief of Aerospace Medicine.

Dr. Galloway has served as the Medical Director for the Northern Michigan Hematology/Oncology Program and as the chair of the McLaren Northern Michigan Cancer Committee. She has provided leadership for the Hospital’s sustained American College of Surgeon’s Commission on Cancer Accreditation and serves as the physician advisor for the Michigan Breast Oncology Quality Initiative through Blue Cross Blue Shield. Dr. Galloway also served as the lead in attaining the 2010 national Quality Oncology Physician Initiative certification for Northern Hematology Oncology physician practice.

Among her contributions, Dr. Galloway led the initiative to coordinate rural oncology services for the “Tip of the Mitt” with Cheboygan and Charlevoix satellite centers. She presently serves on the Ethics Committee, Breast Advisory Board, Cancer Conference, and Cancer Quality Subcommittees at McLaren Northern Michigan.

Dr. Galloway is board certified in internal medicine and medical oncology and is a member of the American Society of Oncology, the American Society of Hematology, American Society of Internal Medicine, the Aerospace Medical Association, and Association of Military Surgeons of the United States.

Justin F. Klamerus, MD, received his medical degree from the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and completed his residency in internal medicine at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. Upon graduation, Dr. Klamerus served as Chief Medical Resident and Clinical Instructor of internal medicine. He completed fellowship training in medical oncology at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins University. He is board certified in internal medicine and medical oncology.

Dr. Klamerus is active in national and regional efforts dedicated to improving cancer care for underserved patients. His research at Johns Hopkins focused on the impact of insurance on access to cancer services and lung cancer. He also recently published a book for patients with lung cancer, “The Johns Hopkins Patient Guide to Lung Cancer,” which he co-wrote and edited with Dr. David Ettinger and Dr. Julie Brahmer.  

Dr. Klamerus is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s Government Relations Committee, the Chair of the Organization of Resident Representatives of the Association of American Medical Colleges, and also serves as a delegate to the Michigan State Medical Society.

Dr. Klamerus serves as interim president and medical director of McLaren Cancer Institute. He is the chair of the Cancer Quality Committee and chair-elect of the Cancer Committee of McLaren Northern Michigan.

Edward F. Smith, MD, graduated from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine in 1982 and completed both an internship and his residency at Blodgett Memorial Medical Center in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He completed his fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at the University of Michigan Medical Center and is board certified in internal medicine, hematology, and medical oncology.

Dr. Smith is currently on the medical staff at Helen Newberry Joy Hospital in Newberry, Michigan, Mackinac Straits Hospital in St. Ignace, Michigan, and McLaren Northern Michigan in Petoskey, Michigan. He has been with McLaren Northern Michigan since 1999, and works collaboratively with Mackinac Straits Hospital and McLaren Northern Michigan to provide cancer and hematology care in the Eastern Upper Peninsula.

Dr. Smith is a member of the American Society of Hematology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, American College of Physicians, and was elected to the Board of Michigan Society of Hematology Oncology. His research experience includes the Southwest Oncology Group Affiliation Program through Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit from 1999 to present.

Ervin Hire, MD practiced for 7 years at McLaren Northern Michigan before leaving the area. After pursing a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan, Dr. Hire earned his medical degree from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. He then completed an internal medicine residency at Southwestern Michigan Area Health Education Center in Kalamazoo, Michigan, in addition to a fellowship in medical oncology at Wayne State University. He is board certified in internal medicine and medical oncology.

Amy Bolmer, DO recieved her medical degree from Michigan State University and is board certified in Internal Medicine and Oncology. Dr. Bolmer has a special interest in Adult Medical Oncology.
