Hesham E Gayar, MD

A board-certified radiation oncologist, Dr. Gayar is chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology at McLaren Flint and medical director for McLaren Proton Therapy Center and McLaren Cancer Institute facilities in Flint, Lapeer and Owosso. He also serves as clinical assistant professor in the Department of Radiology at Michigan State University and a RTOG Principal Investigator.
Dr. Gayar has led the radiation oncology program since he joined McLaren in 1990. His efforts have been instrumental in bringing advanced and innovative forms of radiation therapy to McLaren Cancer Institute in Flint, Michigan; including the development of the McLaren Proton Therapy Center. Dr. Gayar is a member and Past President of the Board of Directors for Genesee County Medical Society. He is a delegate to the Michigan State Medical Society, an American College of Surgeons Liaison Physician, a consultant to the Certificate of Needs Board for the State of Michigan, and is a board member for the Proton Collaborative Group. He is vice president for the Particle Therapy Co-Operative Group, North America and a board member and steering committee member for the Particle Therapy Co-Operative Group, worldwide organization.

Jack Nettleton, MD

Dr. Jack Nettleton is a board certified radiation oncologist at McLaren Cancer Institute, including McLaren Proton Therapy Center. Dr. Nettleton joined McLaren in 1994 and treats patients at both their Flint and Owosso radiation oncology offices. His clinical expertise includes utilizing advanced external beam radiotherapy systems including the Varian TrueBeam STx, Clinac 21 iX, and the TomoTherapy linear accelerators. He also uses brachytherapy (internal radiation) therapies such as low dose rate (LDR) permanent seed implantation and high dose rate (HDR) computer-guided treatment and placement of fiducial marker seeds. In January 2012, Dr. Nettleton completed special training for proton therapy through the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in Switzerland.
Dr. Nettleton holds a medical degree from University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle and completed residency in radiation oncology through the University of Minnesota Hospital in Minneapolis. He is a member of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology, Genesee County Medical Society, and Michigan State Medical Society.

Kiran Devisetty,M.D.

Dr. Devisetty, a board certified radiation oncologist, joined McLaren Cancer Institute in August of 2012. He received his medical degree from The University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor. He completed medical residency and fellowship in radiation oncology at University of Chicago Hospitals in Chicago, Illinois and trained in proton therapy through the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland. Before joining McLaren, Dr. Devisetty held the position of Assistant Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Medical College of Wisconsin and served as a consulting staff member at three Milwaukee area hospitals.
Recognized for his outstanding scholarly activity, his work has been presented in locations spanning the globe. He is a member of the American Medical Association and a number of professional societies devoted to the advancement of cancer care.

SungYong Park, Ph.D

Dr. SungYong Park is Chief Physicist in the Department of Radiation Oncology at McLaren. In this position, Dr. Park oversees the operations of the Proton Therapy Center and the cancer program’s existing photon linear accelerators. He comes to McLaren from the National Cancer Center in Korea where, as a chief physicist, he implemented the launch of their proton therapy program. He has developed the first medical physics residency program in Korea. His knowledge and experience in the field has led to his involvement with several prestigious scientific groups including membership in the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC TC 62C) Working Party on Light Ion Therapy; the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) Task Group No. 199; serving as a task group member on Medical Physics Credentialing Board of International Organization for Medical Physics (IOMP), a treasurer of World Congress on Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering 2006, a committee member of Professional Relation Committee of International Organization for Medical Physics (IOMP), an international relations secretary of Korean Society of Medical Physics (KSMP), a scientific committee chairman of Korean Society of Medical Physics for Radiosurgery (KSMPS), a steering committee member of Particle Therapy Co-Operative Group (PTCOG), and a scientific chair of Particle Therapy Co-operative Group (PTCOG) 2012. Dr. Park has published more than 92 research articles and given more than 46 invited talks. He has also received several research grants and patents. His current research interest includes the Proton Digital Tomosynthesis, the Proton Beam Dosimetry, the Proton Inhomogeneity Correction, and Image Guided Brachytherapy.
Dr. Park received his doctoral degree in Physics from Kyonggi University in Korea. He also holds both a Master of Science in Radiological Physics and a Master of Arts in Physics from Wayne State University in Detroit. He is certified by the Korean Board of Medical Physics (KBMP). He is currently an active member of American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM), American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO), European Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ESTRO), Korean Society of Medical Physics (KSMP) and the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE).

Bijan Arjomandy, Ph.D

Dr. Bijan Arjomandy is the Senior Proton Medical Physicist at McLaren Proton Therapy Center. He joined McLaren in 2011 bringing with him a wealth of experience in proton radiotherapy. Previously, Dr. Arjomandy was one of the lead clinical proton therapy physicists who helped in commissioning and implementing new technologies and concepts at Proton Therapy Center in Houston. He was also an Associate Professor at Loma Linda University Medical Center where he was involved with proton and photon radiotherapy. His work and effort in developing the first comprehensive quality assurance program for proton radiotherapy has been published and utilized by many proton therapy centers. He also developed the first quality assurance procedures using a commercial 2D ionization chamber detector for patients who are treated with proton radiotherapy. He has actively been training medical physicists, medical dosimetrists and physicians about proton radiotherapy. The primary focus of his research interest is related to the accurate dose delivery and dose verifications, and employment of new technology for tumor tracking and accurate delivery of dose to tumors in motion.
Dr. Arjomandy holds a Ph.D. in Physics form University of Arizona. He is certified by the American Board of Radiology and a member of American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM). He is currently an active member of Task Groups (TG) at AAPM and the Chairman of TG (AAPM) on Quality Assurance of Proton Therapy Machines.

Wen Hsi, Ph.D.
|
Wen Hsi, Ph.D., joined the McLaren Proton Therapy team as senior medical physicist in 2013. Dr. Hsi has a wealth of experience in medical physics and proton therapy. He completed the commissioning of the first uniform-scanning proton beam in North America at what is now named Indiana University Proton Therapy Center. Following his three years in Indiana, he joined Florida Proton Therapy Institute as an assistant professor where he established proton treatment protocols on treating various disease sites and conducted research to use proton activated positron emission for in-vivo measuring proton depth. He later became director of medical physics with Procure Proton Treatment Centers to establish training programs for physicists, dosimetrists, and radiation therapists and to improve the efficiency of clinic workflow on proton therapy.
Dr. Hsi’s special areas of expertise includes building various integration dosimeters, establishing the accurate dose measurements for complex patterns of proton spot-scanning beams, and extending his research on measuring proton-activated positron-emission distributions for active proton spot-scanning beam to determine in-vivo proton penetration depth for individual treatment.
Dr. Hsi received a Ph.D in experimental nuclear physics Michigan State University. In 2004, he became certified as a medical physicist of radiation oncology by the American Board of Medical Physics. Dr. Hsi is a member of American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) and also an active committee member for AAPM Task Groups (TG) on proton therapy.

TaeKyu Lee, Ph.D

Dr. TaeKyu Lee is a Senior Medical Physicist at McLaren Proton Therapy Center. Most recently, he was a proton physicist at Hampton University Proton Therapy Institute (HUPTI) where he held a lead role in the acceptance tests and commissioning of the proton therapy system, configuration of proton treatment planning system, and initiation of quality assurance (QA) protocols for the readiness for patient treatment, etc. Dr. Lee is experienced in developing in-house software systems to streamline proton commissioning and QA processes at high accuracy, has developed several proton clinical research projects including proton dose modeling and respiratory gating in proton therapy, and has also developed a computer software tool that evaluates treatment plans with physical and biological metrics.
Dr. Lee served as associate director of the medical physics program at Hampton University where he developed and prepared the program for CAMPEP accreditation.
His current clinical research interest includes respiratory gated proton therapy, lung tumor motion estimation for tumor-tracking during proton beam delivery, radiobiological proton plan evaluation tool development, and proton dose modeling.
Dr. Tae Kyu Lee received his Ph.D. in Medical Physics at Purdue University and he is an active member of American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM).

Travis Schultz, MS

Travis Schultz has held the position of Medical Physicist at McLaren Cancer Institute, including McLaren Proton Therapy Center, since 2009. His special interests include working in Emerging Technologies in Medical Physics, Adaptive Radiotherapy, Stereotactic Radiation Therapy, Applications of Information Technology in Radiation Oncology Physics, and good coffees!
He holds a Master of Science in Radiological Physics from Wayne State University in Detroit, and a Master of Information Systems from Lawrence Tech University in Southfield, Michi

Laureen Beaudry, RT (R) (T)

Laureen Beaudry is manager of oncology services for proton therapy. She oversees therapy staffing, scheduling of patient treatments, and coordinating proton plan review rounds with the treatment team. Laureen is a registered Radiographic Technologist and Radiation Therapist certified in radiography and therapy and has been with McLaren since 1996

Renee O'Neal, CMD, R.T., (R) (T)
|
Renee O’Neal has held the position of Certified Medical Dosimetrist at McLaren Cancer Institute since 2012. She works closely with the radiation oncologists and medical physicists in planning 3D, Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy, and stereotactic radiation therapy. She also serves as Dosimetry Clinical Preceptor under McLaren Cancer Institute’s affiliation with the University of Wisconsin La Crosse Medical Dosimetry Program.
She is board certified by the American Association of Medical Dosimetrists and by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Radiation Therapy from Baker College of Owosso, Owosso, MI, and an Associate of Applied Science in Radiologic Technology from MidMichigan Community College, Harrison, MI.

Douglas Vaughn, CMD (R) (T)

Douglas Vaughn is a member of the radiation oncology team at McLaren Proton Therapy Center. He has been with McLaren since 1992 and has extensive knowledge of the overall characteristics and clinical relevance of radiation oncology treatment machines and equipment. As a dosimetrist, Douglas generates radiation dose distributions and dose calculations in collaboration with the medical physicists and radiation oncologists. Douglas was educated at St Joseph Hospital School of Radiography in Flint MI, The University of Michigan Hospital School of Radiation Therapy in Ann Arbor, MI. He is certified in radiography, radiation therapy and medical dosimetry. |

Amanda Maguire B.S., R.T.(T)

Amanda Maguire graduated in 2006 from the University of Michigan – Flint with a bachelor’s degree in Radiation Therapy during which she trained at the U of M Hospital in Ann Arbor along with their affiliate organizations. It was at that time when she joined McLaren Flint as a certified radiation therapist in charge of delivering accurate ionizing radiation treatments and offering emotional support to patients. Amanda is currently pursuing a Masters of Science in Administration and Leadership through Central Michigan University. At the Proton Therapy Center, Amanda serves as a proton radiation therapist as well as aides in its further development.

Claire Smith B.S., R.T. (T)

Claire Smith is a registered radiation therapist and has been with McLaren Cancer Institute since 2006. She started her career at McLaren in the photon department delivering daily treatments as well as performing simulations to prepare patients for treatment. She then transitioned to the McLaren Proton Therapy Center as a staff therapist assisting patients with their positioning and daily treatments. She earned a bachelor's degree in Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences and Biomedical Sciences from Grand Valley State University. At home she likes to hang out with her two Labrador Retrievers: Bailey and Chloe.

Jean Battles, LMSW, ACSW

Jean Battles holds a Master of Social Work degree and is a licensed Master of Social Work in the State of Michigan. She holds recognition by the Academy of Certified Social Workers, and she has been a medical social worker with McLaren for over 21 years. Her specialization for the last 13 years has been working with cancer patients. She provides assistance in addressing any special needs that arise with a cancer diagnosis; including individual counseling, community referrals, help acquiring resources, consultation and coordination with medical team members, and problem solving.

Gail Singer, MA, LPC, ATR

Gail Singer is a licensed professional counselor and registered art therapst. She joined McLaren in 2009 and has transformed the art therapy program, Healing Through Art, from its infancy into a meaningful program that offers multiple workshop and individual opportunities to patients, survivors, caregivers, and family members. Gail uses the creative process of art making to improve and enhance the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of each individual.

Emily Kuberski, RD

Emily Kuberski has been a practicing Registered Dietitian since 2005. She has been with McLaren Cancer Institute since August 2012. Emily has had extensive experience in long-term care setting. Helping patients maintain adequate nutritional status and preventing weight loss is a specialty area. Currently as a member of the cancer treatment team, Emily focuses on managing side effects of cancer treatment through diet. She works with patients and family members before, during, and after cancer treatments by providing individual counseling and group classes.
