The IRMC Pre-Med Undergraduate Summer Internship is a valuable experience for pre-med undergraduate students to become immersed in the healthcare environment. The internship will be held at various locations throughout the IRMC health system. Some of the specialties will include Surgery, Orthopedics, Emergency Medicine, Family Practice, Oncology, etc. At this time, medical schools require ~ 300 hours of clinical exposure, with at least 100 of them being shadowing, for entrance. Research hours are not considered adequate to fulfill this requirement. In addition, medical schools have realized that volunteer hours often do not correlate with clinical medicine exposure. As a result, they are no longer accepting those hours for this purpose. At the completion of the IRMC Summer Internship, each participant will receive a Certificate documenting the hours (320) and medical rotations for their medical school applications. It is a good opportunity to get an in depth exposure to medicine and determine if this career path is the right one for you. This program is very competitive (8 applicants will be accepted).
