The IRMC Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) Program is a 12-month program for college students who wish to be engaged, empowered and enabled to become competent entry level professionals to the medical field. We are committed to a comprehensive, quality program for the student who wants to acquire the knowledge, understanding, values and skill set necessary to become a successful Medical Laboratory Scientist. Graduates will be prepared for future roles in clinical laboratory science, research, education and administration. There is little public awareness of this laboratory profession. It is part of our mission to promote the field of Medical Laboratory Science and educate the public on the indispensable role we play in the serving the needs of the patient and healthcare system.
MLS is an unseen partner in patient care. We provide essential information on which decisions, diagnoses, and treatment plans are made for each individual patient. Together with physicians, nurses and the medical community, the medical laboratory scientist is an indispensable partner in the healthcare team.
The MLS performs a variety of testing using state of the art instrumentation and equipment to measure, observe, and analyze the physiological systems of each individual patient leading to diagnoses, treatment, monitoring of disease and health maintenance. The MLS uses a variety of skills to insure accurate and reliable results for each patient they serve. The MLS holds a bachelor’s degree in science along with a year of clinical training in an accredited school and national certifications. Because of the ever-changing nature of diagnostic testing, this field is one of continual learning. Professional development is a life-long process and students learn to take responsibility for growth in their chosen field of study.
There are many areas of interest within the medical laboratory. The MLS students become familiar with each area. Some may decide to specialize in a particular area while others are generalists and work in all or most areas within the lab. Areas include blood bank, chemistry, coagulation, hematology, immunology, serology, microbiology and molecular diagnostics. The laboratory also includes the more specialized areas of cytology, histology and pathology.
There is currently a critical shortage of medical laboratory scientists across the country. Many opportunities exist for students who complete their studies in this field and take the national certification exam conducted by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP). Come learn and grow with us!

Consideration for the program is determined by assessing each student in the following areas; scholastic aptitude, academic achievement, personal qualities and the physical and emotional health necessary to fulfill the objectives of the program.
Priority will be given to students from affiliated colleges and universities and current employees.
Education Requirements: 3+1 or 4+1 programs.
The student who is currently in the third year of study at an affiliated university ready to go into one year of clinical training, is acceptable so long as the course work is completed, an acceptable grade obtained by the start of the clinical year and other admission criteria is met, (considered 3+1 program).
Grades are submitted to the affiliated university at the end of the didactic portion of the program and at the end of the clinical year.
Those students having already completed a BS in a related science may attend for the one year of clinical training as long as other admission criteria are met; (considered 4+1 program).
GPA Requirements:
- A minimum GPA of 2.5 overall
- A minimum GPA of 2.5 in Science and Math
- Successful completion of no less than 16 hours in Biology including Anatomy, Physiology and/or Genetics.
- Successful completion of no less than 16 hours in Chemistry to include biochemistry and/or organic chemistry.
- Successful completion of no less than 3 semester hours in college Math.
- Recommended course work includes; Anatomy, Physiology, Genetics, Immunology, Molecular Biology, and Statistics.
Requirements:
- A cover letter indicating why the prospective student would like to attend
- A completed application returned by the deadline
- 3 letters of recommendation
- A resume
- A copy of their college or university transcripts sent directly from the university
- The non-refundable application fee of $35 must accompany the application
All applicants who meet the qualifications will be asked to come in for an interview with the program director before admission to the program. Students are required to carry health insurance.
The IRMC Medical Laboratory Science Program will only accept 5 students into the program per year. This small class size is intended to foster an atmosphere of individualized attention and the best possible learning environment for our students. This class size allows us to guarantee each student clinical placement.
The clinical year runs for 12 consecutive months from July to June. Students can expect 8 hours per day of instruction Monday through Friday. Approximately 2,000 hours of instruction is included with holidays and weekends off. Study hours outside of lecture and clinical lab should be expected and planned for by the student.
Didactic class time and clinical rotation days are Monday – Friday. Hours for didactic and student laboratory are typically 0700 – 1530. Clinical rotation and phlebotomy training hours may occur between 0430 – 1900. Observed holidays include: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.
Total credits hours are based on didactic lecture, student lab, and clinical lab hours.
Courses include:
- Clinical Chemistry and Molecular Diagnostics
- Hematology and Coagulation
- Immunology Serology
- Immuno-Hematology (Transfusion Medicine)
- Microbiology, Parasitology, Mycology, Virology
- Urinalysis and Body Fluid Analysis
- Phlebotomy
- Laboratory Safety
- Clinical Seminar, Laboratory Management, Research and Education
The goal of IRMC Medical Laboratory Scientist program is to provide the student an exceptional, professional education in the field of medical laboratory science. Upon completion of the program, the student be able to sit for a national certification and a well trained medical laboratory scientist will be available to the medical community. To accomplish this, the program will provide didactic preparation in specific courses and student lab along with hands on training in the clinical laboratory setting. The focus will include entry level competency in the cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains.
Tuition is $10,000 for the program and may be paid either in full at the beginning of the semester or by two equal payments of $5,000 each. One payment made by the beginning of the first semester and the second by the first day of the second semester.
Tuition reimbursement may be available to qualifying students upon successful completion the program, passing the ASCP BOC registry and being offered a position at IRMC with a three year commitment.
Students are not guaranteed an offer of employment.
Additional expenses include:
1. $35.00 non-refundable application fee
2. $250.00 non-refundable fee to hold the student’s seat in the class due upon acceptance.
This will be deducted from tuition when the student stays in the program.
1. Textbooks and supplies are obtained through the school and are approximately $1,000.00
